FOR DEVELOPMENT—König and Chaponda at the reception

Germany has supported the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) to generate more than K40 billion in additional revenue through tax audits during the 2025-26 financial year, German Ambassador to Malawi Ute König has said.

König said the revenue helped expand the government’s fiscal space at a time Malawi was pursuing economic reforms and seeking to strengthen domestic revenue mobilisation.

She was speaking recently in Lilongwe, at a reception marking Germany’s National Day.

König said the support was part of Germany’s broader development cooperation with Malawi, which covers public finance management, health, social protection, agriculture, energy and private sector development.

“This means an extraordinary success in increasing the fiscal space urgently needed for the reform path of the Malawi government,” König said.

She also announced that Germany had also committed €68.8 million towards bilateral development programmes in Malawi, following government-to-government negotiations held in Bonn in December 2025.

The funding will support sexual and reproductive health, social protection, private and financial sector development, food systems transformation, public finance management and anti-corruption initiatives.

König said Germany remained committed to supporting Malawi’s development agenda despite ongoing reforms to its own development policy.

She said the changes would focus on directing resources to areas where they were most needed while improving accountability, monitoring and the measurement of results.

“Ending hunger, poverty and inequality will remain our priority,” she said.

On social protection, König said the Malawi Social Registry, which receives German support, now covered more than 80 percent of the population and was being used by over 20 programmes to identify and assist vulnerable households.

She further disclosed that German-supported agricultural finance interventions had helped more than 28,000 smallholder farmers and micro, small and medium enterprises, mainly women and young people, access financial services worth €5.3 million.

König said German-supported energy initiatives had reached more than 2.3 million people, while climate-smart aquaculture training was helping rural households improve fish production, incomes and dietary diversity.

She said the two countries would hold further government-to-government consultations in Lilongwe in about two weeks, ahead of negotiations on new development commitments expected in the first quarter of 2027.

Meanwhile, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation George Chaponda commended Germany for its continued support towards Malawi’s development, saying the partnership was important to the country’s efforts to achieve its Malawi 2063 development agenda.

Chaponda said Germany’s contribution to sectors such as health, social protection, public finance management and rural economic development had helped advance the country’s development priorities.
