The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) has issued three new operating licences to Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) that will run for the next 10 years.
These licences include the Application Services Licence, Network Facilities Licence, and Network Services Licence, serving as the renewal of the old licences.

Speaking during a handover event in Blantyre, Macra Director General Daud Suleman said the licences are key for MTL to expand its infrastructure and service offerings, aligning with the country’s vision for a digitally inclusive society.
“MTL is the backbone and a mother of telecommunication services that needs to be supported. These licences will enable MTL to drive the digital agenda and ensure that all Malawians can benefit from modern telecommunications services,” Suleman said.

PCL Chief Executive Officer Ronald Mangani said the transition from the old to the new MTL is a significant step towards achieving growth and enhancing service delivery.
“As the country continues to embrace digitalisation, MTL’s enhanced role is poised to make a substantial impact on the accessibility and quality of telecommunication services nationwide,” Mangani said.
MTL Chief Executive Officer Harry Gombachika highlighted that the renewal and acquisition of new operating licences mark a new era for the company.
He said the expansion of broadband and digital broadcasting services under the licence is a crucial step towards bridging the digital divide in Malawi, where more people will have access to information and communication technologies, facilitating greater digital inclusion.
