President Lazarus Chakwera has reiterated the need for Malawi to transition to digital economy as one way of aiding access to services and spurring socio-economic development.
Chakwera said this during a meeting with pan-African Investors in New York, the United States, on the sidelines of the 78th United General Assembly.
He said he was elated that some investors were interested in streamlining digital capabilities across all key sectors of development.
Chakwera said the idea of coming up with emerging technologies would promote the transformation of businesses in Malawi.
He commended Africa Centre for Advanced Technologies for its commitment to partner Malawi in using innovative and appropriate technology in areas of agriculture, education and health, among others.
Commenting on the development, Foreign Affairs Minister Nancy Tembo said the meeting provides a platform for Malawi to boost its chances of meeting Sustainable Development Goal number 9 on inclusive digital transformation.
Tembo said the coming in of Africa Centre for Advanced Technologies would help address digital development challenges prevailing in the country.
“For Malawi to embrace digital technology, there is a need for it to partner international organisations to increase and strengthen local ecosystems that will enhance the availability of digital connectivity,” Tembo said.
Speaking on behalf of Africa Centre for Advanced Technologies, Olivia Nathongo said the meeting dwelled on pushing African countries towards the digital transformation roadmap.
This was a follow-up meeting to the one that took place in August this year, when officials from the company visited Malawi.
