President Lazarus Chakwera has commended the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church on various development contributions to the country.
He has since called on the church to do more for Malawians. Chakwera made the call yesterday when he attended the church’s celebrations marking 100 years of spreading the gospel in Blantyre City through Chiwembe SDA Church.
He said the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Malawi has made huge investments in the education sector, for example, producing schools that train youths for productive work in various sectors.
“It is no secret that the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Malawi has made huge investments in the health sector, producing health facilities that nurse our patients back to health with excellence and compassion,” he said.
He further commended the church for making contributions to governance, with prominent members of the church serving in various positions of influence in government under different administrations.

He called on the leaders of the church and the youth to continue the good works of development beyond the 100 years of its work in Malawi.
“I call on you to develop more schools to occupy the education sector until the Lord comes. I call on you to develop more hospitals to occupy the health sector until the Lord comes. I call on you to develop mega farms to occupy the agricultural sector until the Lord comes.
“I call on you to develop more arts to occupy the creative sector until the Lord comes. I call on you to develop thriving businesses to occupy the economic sector until the Lord comes. I call on you to run for elected office and join the civil service to occupy the public sector until the Lord comes,” he said.
President of the SDA Church in Malawi Tony Nyirenda said the church will continue winning souls to Christ and ensuring they are good citizens who aid the development of the nation.

“We have plans to improve our schools, hospitals as well as various programs that promote the development of the country. But overall we will continue preaching the good news of our Lord Jesus Christ,” he said.
The church first arrived in Blantyre and was received at Chiwembe in 1923 where people got baptized and opened a church.
The event yesterday was a culmination of centennial celebration activities which started on October 15.
