Weather projections for months between February and April this year show that the country will experience prolonged dry spells in some periods.
Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services Lucy Mtilatila told The Daily Times that this follows heavy warm conditions triggered by El Niño weather conditions.
“This is a continuation of what we predicted in October [last year]. The weather forecast indicated that there would be persistent rainfall [which] we are experiencing now. Now, from February to April this year, we must expect dry spells following El Niño conditions,” she said.
In his State of the Nation Address on Friday, President Lazarus Chakwera said 1.5 million farmers who had access to Affordable Inputs Programme would produce 1,125,000 metric tonnes of maize, contributing 32 percent to Malawi’s national food grain requirement.
