The country’s graft bursting body Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) has partnered Football Association of Malawi (Fam) in fighting corruption after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at Mpira Village in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre, Monday.
ACB Director General Martha Chizuma said they will use football as a vehicle for disseminating anti-corruption messages.
Chizuma said the partnership would also give them more room to investigate sports-related cases such as match-fixing, favouritism in the allocation of referees and also fight gate fraud, among others.
“When we say we want to fight corruption, we are trying to use all available platforms of football through Fam to disseminate anti-corruption messages. With this enhanced partnership, we will also give much more and better attention to make sure that we investigate and conclude corruption-related cases,” Chizuma said.
However, she admitted that her body sometimes takes a lot of time to investigate and conclude corruption cases.

“There are some cases from the soccer fraternity that have taken four years or so but be assured that, with this partnership, we will make sure that they are concluded,” she said.
On his part, Fam President Walter Nyamilandu hailed ACB for the partnership, saying football has the platform for the body to disseminate its messages to the public.
“Football brings people from different backgrounds and religions. We would like to assure ACB that you have not made a wrong choice to partner with football as we have numerous products and platforms that can be used in the fight against corruption,” he said.
Among other things, Nyamilandu said they would support ACB in fighting corruption by facilitating placements of anti-corruption messages on merchandise, perimeter boards and banners in and outside stadia.
