Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM) has said it wants to see more people playing golf at all levels across the country.
The union’s president Gift Chidya Gondwe said they have drawn inspiration from the country’s top two citizens, President Lazarus Chakwera and his vice Saulos Chilima, who play the game at every given opportunity.
Chakwera and Chilima were in action last Saturday during the Presidential Charity Golf tournament at Lilongwe Golf Club which raised K406 million for Cyclone Freddy survivors and needy public university students.
Gondwe said they are working on doing away with the general belief that golf is a game for the rich only.
“We want communities in the remotest parts of the country to embrace our game.

We want to do away with the misconception that you can only play this game at established golf clubs in the country. This is a game that can be played even on a football pitch in the village.
“So we are telling people that they do not need to have a lot of money to start playing golf. We want communities to set up their golf teams and we will be making arrangements for them to be visiting established golf clubs to appreciate what happens at that level. We are bringing golf to the people,” he said.
Gondwe argued that golf is a cheap game that can be played by any Malawian and has no age limitations.
“We have seen athletes retiring from various games because they are advanced in age. This does not happen in the game of golf. Age will not limit you. You can play golf for as long as you want, whether young or old, rich or poor,” he said.

Malawi National Council of Sports Public Relations and Communications Officer Edgar Ntulumbwa described the move as a good initiative which, if well implemented, can help improve the standards of golf in the country.
