Director of Arts in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture Humphrey Mpondaminga has said they are committed to supporting the creative sector, describing it as an engine for economic growth.
Mpondaminga said this recently in Lilongwe where he represented Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Alfred Gangata during the official launch of Pabwalo Multipurpose Room at the National Library Service (NLS).
“We are working on clear intentions to ensure artists are fairly compensated for their work. Modern infrastructure is built to support production and showcase their talent,” Mpondaminga said.
During the launch, Mpondaminga also spoke highly about the National Arts and Heritage Council (Nahec).
He then hailed NLS— in partnership with Malawi National Commission for Unesco, Music Crossroads Malawi and Rei Foundation Limited— for bringing forth Pabwalo Multipurpose Room.

“Pabwalo implies people coming together with a clear intention and a real commitment to arts and culture. I must say that this is a good example of what collaboration can achieve when everyone is pulling in the same direction,” Mpondaminga said.
Described as Lilongwe’s New Hub for Knowledge, Arts and Ideas, Mpondaminga said the multipurpose room— which is located at NLS campus—stands out as a space with a purpose.
“Pabwalo space brings together tradition and new ways of learning,” he said.
The space is expected to accommodate up to 90 people.

Music Crossroads Malawi Director Mathews Mfune said Monday that the initiative built on the partners’ long standing collaboration, dating back to 2012, which contributed to documenting the country’s cultural traditions and led to the development of the Malawi Folktales and Folksongs Database.
The launch was spiced up by a variety of cultural activities served by, among others, Pabwalo Choir, Kauma Primary School, Music Crossroads Malawi Band, Jaco Jana and Hear Us Children.
