Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa, who was on a one-week tour of Uganda, has described the trip as successful, saying he has learned a lot from that country’s opposition.
Nankhumwa, who left the country for the east African country on July 8, returned home via Kamuzu International Airport on Saturday.
On Friday, Nankhumwa met the leader of Uganda’s National Unity Platform Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu at the party’s headquarters in Kamwokya, in Uganda’s capital, Kampala.
Ssentamu is popularly known by his stage name Bobi Wine and is a renowned musician and actor. He is a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Kyadondo County East Constituency in Wakiso District, Uganda’s Central Region.
In January 2021, Bobi Wine contested as presidential candidate on National Unity Platform ticket but lost to the incumbent Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, a result which Ssentamu strongly disputed.
“I have learned a lot from the Uganda opposition figure, who has also learned a lot from me. Our discussions centred on a wide range of issues of mutual interest, including politics, economy, climate change and civil conflicts ravaging some parts of the African continent. We, therefore, agreed to deepen mutual cooperation on many fronts,” Nankhumwa said.
During the meeting with Nankhumwa, Ssentamu was accompanied by Luis Rubongoya, who is the secretary general of National Unity Platform, and Kiyaga Hillary Innocent, popularly known as Dr Hilderman, who is also a renowned musician and MP for Mawokota County North.
Ssentamu has also indicated, on the party’s social media platform, that the engagement was successful.
Apart from engaging Ssentamu, Nankhumwa met and held discussions with the Ugandan Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga.
