Kukoma Cooking Oil producers, Capital Oil Refining Industries Limited (Cori), a wholly Malawian company that was established in 1988, has donated K20 million to the Presidential Charity Golf Organising Committee.
The committee is organising a golf tournament set for October 7 in Lilongwe.
Cori Sponsorship Coordinator Violet Kapolo said they felt duty-bound to contribute financial resources to the tournament as it seeks to address some of the problems Tropical Cyclone Freddy survivors and needy students are facing in public universities.
“When we heard about the Presidential Golf Tournament, we decided to join the cause because we are a responsible corporate player. In fact, health and sports are in our corporate social responsibility goals. They [health and sports] are key areas.
“Kukoma and sports have a long relationship. In addition, Malawians use our Kukoma product and, as such, what we have done is simply giving back to the community,” Kapolo said.

She said the financial contribution comes on top of the funds the company injected in cyclone recovery efforts.
Members of the Presidential Charity Golf Organising Committee Ulemu Mlisa Luhanga and Sophie Kalambule hailed Cori for the gesture, saying it would go a long way in ensuring that the tournament is a success.
“On behalf of the Presidential Charity Golf Organising Committee, I would like to thank Capital Oil Refining Industries Limited for contributing K20 million, which will go a long way in assisting cyclone survivors and needy students in universities as they need tuition fees and upkeep.
“Other than bringing golfers together, funds that will be raised will go to Freddy survivors and those struggling to pay tuition fees,” Kalambule said.
