By Bishop Witmo:
President Lazarus Chakwera has said his government is committed to ensuring that Malawi meets its development goals.
He said this at Mangochi Boma Monday, when he was on his way to Chikoko Bay State Lodge.
The President said through development projects, his administration was promoting food security, infrastructure development and creating economic opportunities for Malawians.
“The First Lady and I are excited to be warmly welcomed by the people of Mangochi. As you are aware, my administration has demonstrated commitment to uplifting livelihoods of Malawians through various development projects.
“However, I am aware of the challenges that Malawians are facing due to the effects of climate change. We are touched whenever we see survivors of cyclones. Let us not lose hope; you have a government that considers the welfare of citizens,” Chakwera said.
He, therefore, assured Mangochi residents of continued development.
“My administration has implemented a number of projects in Mangochi including the Nkhudzi-Bay water supply system, which is supplying water to many households across the district.
“We have constructed the Cape Maclear road, which will boost tourism,” Chakwera said, adding that his government had also done a lot in the health sector, notably the construction of healthcare service facilities such as Makanjira Rural Hospital,” Chakwera said.
Chakwera said the government was also embarking on the Makanjira road project, saying funds had been sourced.
He commended development partners for supporting projects that were being implemented in Malawi.
The President also said he was excited to see the mega farms initiative becoming a reality in Mangochi, where farmers have started practising large-scale winter irrigation farming.
He appealed to young people in the country to refrain from engaging in political violence, saying it had no place in democratic Malawi.
‘‘There are some people that would like to cause political violence and they consider youths as a tool for perpetuating such acts. I am, therefore, urging the youth to refrain from such acts.
“Let us continue to live in harmony. We are one nation,” Chakwera said.
On his part, Traditional Authority Mapira thanked the government for embarking on relief maize distribution exercises that were targeting hunger-stricken households under the Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme that is underway in the district.—Mana
