President Lazarus Chakwera has asked national teams from other disciplines to emulate the feat of Malawi Women’s National Football Team, The Scorchers.

In his State of the Nation address, Chakwera was reacting to the Scorchers’ victory after they won the Cosafa Women’s Championship for the first time last year.
“In sports, our first point of celebration is in football, where the Malawi Women’s National Football team, the Scorchers, achieved an outstanding feat by winning the Cosafa Women’s Championship with a 100 percent record, having won all five matches,” Chakwera said amid applause.
Chakwera said other sporting disciplines must follow suit during international competitions.
“This is progress, and we must not only build on it, but also replicate the success factors in other disciplines and extend that mindset to everything we do for the development of our youth,” Chakwera said.
National Women’s Football Association (NWFA) Chairperson Adellaide Migogo said they have been encouraged by Chakwera’s remarks.
“The Scorchers have the potential to win more reputable trophies if we get adequate support. We need support from the government and private sector to run different competitions and programmes to develop women’s football,” Migogo said.
The Scorchers won the championship after beating Zambia 2-1 in the final at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville Township, Pretoria, South Africa in October.
In individual awards, the Scorchers dominated after Temwa Chawinga scooped the player of the tournament and the Golden Boot Award with nine goals from four games.
In all the games, the Scorchers produced player of the match winners with Temwa winning twice while Sabina Thom, Asimenye Simwaka and Madyina Ngulube won the award once each.
