In an effort aimed at empowering musicians and changing their narrative in terms of cultivating their music trade, Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Malawi College of Accountancy (MCA).
The MoU which comes barely three weeks after the music body also brokered another pact with Bingu School of Culture and Heritage at Malawi University of Science and Technology (Must) in Thyolo is aimed at uplifting the welfare of musicians in the country.
Called Developing Artist Niches in Creative Enterprises (Dance), the initiative, according to the two parties, will help address the financial challenges that musicians experience on a daily basis.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, Mum President Vita Chirwa said musicians get famous and that when prominence goes or money vanishes, they fail to sustain themselves.

“The partnership with MCA is to fix this problem, beginning with training on business and financial management skills. We want more collaborations to improve the welfare of musicians and we call upon players out there to work with us in this mission,” the Kalimba Band leader said.
He said the MoU has come at the right time as they seek to grow the music industry.
MCA Blantyre Campus Director George Kaudza Masina said they decided to partner with Mum as one way of investing in the well-being of musicians as well as addressing the financial challenges that they face.
“We have noted the financial challenges that musicians face; so, we are looking at financial literacy,” Masina said.

He said the deal is also part of their corporate social responsibility in giving back to the community.
“Through the training we will offer, we will be empowering musicians and also challenge them to use their talent positively,” Masina said.
