The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) has said it will launch the Mvera Innovation Smart City project at the inauguration of African Smart Cities Congress in July.
The smart city project is under the African Smart Cities Innovation Foundation.
Macra Director General Daudi Suleman said Malawi will host the inauguration of the Africa Smart City congress, which will be held from July 25 to 27 this year.
Suleman made the remarks during a signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the African Smart Cities Innovation Foundation in Lilongwe on Tuesday.
He said progress of the Mvera City is one milestone to achieve the Malawi 2063 of having a technological advanced and sustainable environmental city.
He said the innovation city will be a model where all technology friendly activities will be implemented.
“We are looking at a city that runs away from fossil fuels, a city that is running on green technology and having a sustainable environment and a city that is scalable,” Suleman said.
African Smart Cities Innovation Foundation Malawi Ambassador Christine Mhone commended Macra for being the main partner of the African Smart Cities Congress and was optimistic that the Mvera city would benefit Malawi as a country.
“It is much possible to achieve smart cities in every country in Africa. We have good examples here in Malawi and also the Mvera city which Macra is about to build and the government has done. We have the secondary cities and other activities that the government is working on,” Mhone said.
Among others, the congregation will bring together investors, key players in the smart cities environment and public and government sector players with their contributions.
