Southern Region Football Association (SRFA) Chairperson Raphael Humba has refuted Malawi National Council of Sports allegations that he abused his position during nominations for the December 16 Football Association of Malawi (Fam) elections.
The polls are set for Grand Palace Hotel in Mzuzu.
Sports Council acting Executive Secretary Shephord Boma wrote Fam on November 28 on SRFA’s alleged conduct with Humba being specifically mentioned to have been influencing his fellow committee members to vote for incumbent president Walter Nyamilandu.
“Council has received a letter from the Anti-Corruption Bureau explaining that on 24th November 2023 it received a complaint that Mr Humba has been abusing his position to influence the outcome of elections for Football Association of Malawi president. It is alleged that Mr Humba has been favouring the current Fam president Mr Walter Nyamilandu by deliberately disregarding SRFA by-laws during the forthcoming elections.
“It is alleged that during the year of electing the Fam president, Mr Humba disregards the rule of selection and chooses individuals who he believes would vote for Mr Nyamilandu,” part of Sports Council’s letter, addressed to Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda, reads.

The letter also demands that Fam should provide a comprehensive report on SRFA’s nomination process including signed minutes of the meeting which took place.
It also asks for a constitution and any pertinent SRFA rules to be submitted by tomorrow.
But Humba has categorically denied the allegations.
“I do not know why I am being targeted. There is absolutely no truth in these accusations. We do not even have any by-laws here at SRFA. I can assure the whole nation that our nominations were free and fair and my general secretary has all the minutes,” he said.

On choosing who goes to cast the ballot on the polling day, Humba said there was nothing wrong as it is his responsibility in line with SRFA’s constitution.
“I do not see any big issues here. But we will furnish Sports Council with all the information ranging from minutes and our constitution,” he said.
Gunda asked for more time to respond to our questionnaire on the matter.
“I am currently in Lilongwe attending a high profile meeting and I will come back to you once I am out of the meeting,” he said.
He was yet to respond by the time we went to press.
