The historical National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Women’s Premiership got underway at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre, with Football Association of Malawi (Fam) pledging free entry for spectators during first-round matches.
Haiya said the move would help in drawing fans to matches and appreciate the women’s game.
“This is the inaugural elite league for women and, first, we want to attract a lot of spectators to appreciate the entertaining nature of the women’s game. Then, once fans start following the game massively, we will make a decision to introduce gate charges.
“In the meantime, the idea of introducing gate charges will be on hold until the end of the first round,” he said.

NBM has pumped K280 million into the inaugural premiership,
Meanwhile, NBM plc Chief Financial Officer Daniel Jere has said the sponsorship is in recognition of the role women play towards the development of the country.
“It is without doubt that women’s football has tremendous value and opportunities that can uplift the lives of many women that live in underserved communities. We want to break the barriers. Women tend to be fairly marginalised and opportunities to the girl-child are not similar to those of a boy-child. We would like to bring a bit of equity into the mix. There are more women in the population than men. Therefore, why should we not invest in women?” Jere asked.
On her part, National Women’s Football Association (NWFA) Chairperson Adellaide Migogo challenged players to give out their best.
During the opening match, Kukoma Ntopwa Women beat FCB Nyasa Bullets Women 1-0 at Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre.
Esther Chauluka earned her side the first full points with a 42nd minute goal.
