Gospel music fanatics had a beautiful outing on Saturday night as they got treated to entertaining performances topped by South Africa’s veteran musician Rebecca Malope widely known as ‘Queen of Gospel’ at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.
Christened Blessings Gospel Concert, the show delivered the harmonious blessings that were served by Malope, Zambia’s Abel Chungu, Uganda’s Colifixe and the local acts of Wendy Harawa, Great Angels Choir and Kondwani Chirwa.
Despite having other events in the capital city on the night, the concert was well patronised.
Malope, who has inspired several gospel musicians in the country, jumped on stage to a delirium of cheers and put up an electric act with her 13-member team that also included her engineer.
With her energy, Malope was electric and brought excitement to the audience and engaged them at will.
But a special moment came when Prophet Shepherd Bushiri danced with the ‘Angingedwa’ and ‘Umoya Wam’ star on the stage.
Bushiri delighted in the moment and no wonder he presented a certificate of honour to Malope on behalf of the country’s gospel artists.
Malope served a flawless performance that showed on the night that she was not out of the game but rather she was still maturing with age.
After her performance, the iconic gospel musician thanked Wendy with his Jacobs Events and Malawians for giving her a warm reception.
“Malawi is my home and I am looking forward to more performances here,” the veteran gospel musician, who last performed in the country in 2015 during Blantyre Arts Festival, said.
Wendy, who had her share of performance, said it was a dream come true for her to fill up BICC auditorium.
“I am short of words for the support that people have given me. The support and enthusiasm added immense joy to the concert,” the ‘Mundisunge Ndinu’, creator, who has collaborated with a number of international acts in recent times including Chungu and Colifixe, said.
Colifixe, who was debuting in the country, had time to share the stage with Wendy in the track ‘Obikyusiza’. This is a track that Wendy featured Colifixe.
Chungu, who is not new to the country’s audience having also starred at Wendy’s album launch last year was also at his finest and gave people a surprise package when he introduced Suffix and Kell Kay on stage in the songs he worked together with them.
Chirwa and Great Angels also delivered lovely performances on the night.
