Police at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe on Sunday arrested a 42-year-old Malawian woman, Madalitso Siphiwe Kauwa, for allegedly attempting to externalise 200,000 South African rand.
Airport Police spokesperson Dorrah Chathyoka said the suspect was arrested at about 7:20 hours as she was about to board a South Africa-bound Malawian flight.
“Police officers initially inquired from the suspect about how much forex she had in possession and she claimed to have 30,000 rand.
“But, upon being physically searched, Kauwa was found with an extra 200,000 rand without supporting documents, leading to her immediate arrest and seizure of the cash,” Chathyoka said.
Chathyoka said Kauwa has been charged with three counts, namely illegal possession of foreign currency, attempting to externalise forex and money laundering.
She comes from Khosola Village Traditional Authority Chikowi, in Zomba District.
