Malawi National Netball Team is hoping to finish among the top three teams at the Africa Netball Cup in Namibia.
The Queens left the country for Namibia via South Africa, ahead of the tournament slated for Swakopmund in Namibia from December 9 to 14.
Queens co-coach Mary Waya, speaking before departure, said they are vying for a top three finish at the tournament.
“Finishing on number one or two will be a big credit to the coaches and players,” she said before adding that they had blended the squad with youthful and experienced players.
“We have fused in youthful players in the squad which has some experienced players. We have selected utility players who can play in at least three positions to be able to rotate and change the team, Waya said.”
Waya said they expect to benefit from the experience of the senior players as they continue to rebuild the squad.
Meanwhile, Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) President Vitumbiko Mwandemange-Gubuduza said winning a medal during this year’s Africa Netball Championship is one of the targets.
“Indeed, we discussed targets when we appointed the coaches weeks back, but we agreed to give them time to go into camp and look at the players before making a commitment.
“I can confirm that, indeed, as guided by Mary, the Queens’ target is to come back with a medal. This is despite the fact that the camp period was shorter than usual. As Nam, we are of the view that we must view rebuilding of the team as a strength. A fusion of young and experienced does set us for greatness if you look at youthful athleticism and the quiet skill and confidence from the experienced players,” she said.
Zambia are the defending champions while both South Africa and Uganda who ranked first and second in Africa respectively have vowed to win the championship.
