Delegates at Football Association of Malawi (Fam) annual general meeting (AGM) Saturday removed three member associations referees, coaches and National Youth — Football Associations from the list of Member Associations (MAs).
This was approved during the association’s AGM at Sunbird Livingstonia Beach Hotel in Salima District.
This means the three associations have been stripped of the voting rights at Fam’s elective General Assembly.
Following the development, Fam has now seven member associations namely Super League of Malawi (Sulom), National Women’s Football Association (NWFA), Beach Soccer Association and four regional football associations.
Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) Chairperson Masiya Nyasulu moved the motion which was unanimously approved during the meeting.

Thirty-one delegates supported the motion whereas three abstained.

Fam President Fleetwood Haiya said this was in line with Fam and Fifa statues.
“We believe that the associations can execute their duties if they are not politicians. But now the associations will be friends of football,” Haiya said.
Haiya said the removal of the three associations was a bold step towards transforming football in the country.

“This a good step towards transforming our football in the country. We will continue engaging the three associations and they will now be reporting to the executive committee,” Haiya said.
But National Football Coaches Association (NFCA) Chairperson Aubrey Nankhuni objected to the decision.
“We are not happy with the decision as coaches association. The best way was to discuss the matter at a separate forum,” Nankhuni said during the meeting.
On his part, National Youth Football Association (NYFA) Chairperson Tiyenkhu Chavula while supporting the motion said there was a need for proper consultations.
“We do not have a problem with that but there is a need for a constitution review so that we follow all the procedures,” he said.
National Referees Association Chairperson Kalyoto Ngosi supported the motion saying it was long overdue.
“We should have amended the constitution a long time ago as Fifa does not recognise the referees association. But we are happy now that the decision has been approved,” he said.
