Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has said it will engage all clubs that have contributed players to Malawi National Football Team’s Cosafa Cup squad in deciding whether to exempt them from TNM Super League fixtures.
The development follows some teams’ reservations against fulfilling Super League fixtures after contributing over four players to the Flames.
Silver Strikers, FCB Nyasa Bullets and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers have contributed more players to the Flames 25-member squad than other teams in the top flight.
According to Article 49 of Sulom statutes on National Representations and National Duty, a club which contributes over four players to the national team shall be exempted from fixtures unless the players are released by the national coach to take part in league matches.
Sulom President Fleetwood Haiya said they will find a better way of handling the matter with the concerned clubs.
“We will make sure that the issue has been sorted out before clubs start travelling for their away matches,’’ Haiya said.
Reports suggest that Sulom and Football Association of Malawi (Fam) earlier this year agreed that the elite league will not be rescheduled due to the Flames’ participation in the Cosafa Cup.
In a brief comment on the matter, Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda said rules and regulations should be respected.
“We should follow the rules and regulations,’’ Gunda said.
In matches scheduled for this weekend, Wanderers are expected to face Mafco at Chitowe Stadium whereas Silver will meet Extreme at Civo Stadium.
Bullets have a date with Blue Eagles at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Flames flew out of the country for the Cosafa Cup in South Africa.
In the course of the week, interim coach Patrick Mabedi named a 25-member squad comprising Chawanangwa Kaonga and Chifundo Mphasi, who ply their trade in Zambia.
The Wanderers players in the squad are Stanley Sanudi, Lawrence Chaziya, Gaddie Chirwa and Christopher Kumwembe while Bullets have contributed Lanjesi Nkhoma, Patrick Mwaungulu, Frank Willard and Alick Lungu.
Nixon Mwase, Chimwemwe Idana, Chikondi Kamanga and Patrick Macheso are the Silver players in the squad.
The Flames are in Group B of the regional contest and will face holders and neighbours Zambia tomorrow at King Zwelithini Stadium before taking on Seychelles on Sunday at the same venue.
