Super League of Malawi (Sulom) President Fleetwood Haiya has said the association will hike club subvention to K20 million from K10 million per team during the 2024 season.
Haiya made the remarks at the end of the 2023 TNM Super League season at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, where FCB Nyasa Big Bullets were crowned champions after drawing 1-1 with Silver Strikers on Sunday.
“It was a successful season. We managed to play one match per week, which helped players to recover. We had no incident where a team played matches both on Saturday and Sunday, unlike the case in the past. We have, indeed, revived, reformed and rebranded the league.
“Going forward, I would like to announce that we will increase club subvention from K10 million to K20 million for thew next season,” Haiya said.
However, Silver Strikers Company Secretary Peter Masiye said they hope that Haiya’s pledge w o u l d materialise, as it has been made at a time officials are campaigning for Fam executive positions.

“We just heard from the Sulom President [Haiya] about the proposal of hiking subvention from K10 million to K20 million. Well, that is a good proposal.
“We hope it is not a political sentiment just to win votes; as you are aware, he is running for the Fam presidency. Otherwise, it is a good move,” he said.
However, an official from one of the Super League teams said the move can be achieved if Sulom secures additional partners.
“An ambitious project but very challenging at the same time unless, of course, there is a corporate sponsor behind it,” the official said.

However, Sulom General Secretary Williams Banda said Haiya announced the hike on behalf of the association and not as an individual.
“Similarly, his manifesto was adopted and we implemented it as an association. In this case, if he were to be elected Fam president, we, as an association, will carry on the plan,” Banda said.
Haiya was elected Sulom President in February after collecting 30 votes against Tiya Somba Banda’s 18.
