Staff unions of various public universities have demanded a salary increment of between 50 and 60 percent effective April 2026.
On April 7, 2026, Public Universities Staff Union President Jimmy Gondwe directed presidents of staff unions at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mzuzu University, Malawi University of Science and Technology (Must), Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences, Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (Kuhes) and the University of Malawi to facilitate negotiations for the salary hike.
