Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB) has secured a boxing ring from the World Boxing Council (WBC).
MPBCB President Lonzoe ‘Defector’ Zimba, who is attending the 61st Annual World Convention in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, disclosed this Friday.
“As you recall, during last year’s convention in Acapulco, Mexico, I requested the WBC president, Mauricio Sulaimán, to consider supporting us with a boxing ring. I am delighted that WBC has already made payments to a South Africa company, named Title, to produce a boxing ring for us. We will only be required to transport the ring to Malawi from South Africa,” Zimba said.
He said the ring costs $8,500 (about K14,450,000).
He said the ring will ease challenges that mar the sport in the country.
“We do not have standard professional adequate rings in Malawi but the coming in of this one, will help us a lot,” Zimba said.
Lightweight boxer Israel Kam’mwamba encouraged MPBCB to enhance its efforts of resource mobilization.
“We need equipment like rings, gumshields and gloves. This is the way to go,” said Kam’mwamba, who recently pounced on Salimu Chazama for the third time to complete a clean sweep in the trilogy.
Meanwhile, Zimba has been appointed into WBC Amateur programme commission.
“It is an honour to serve in WBC Amateur programme committee and this will help us [MPBCB] develop amateurs with support from WBC,” he said.
According to cletoreyes.com, WBC will work together with USA Boxing, the federations of Canada, Uruguay and Mexico, to give amateur boxing certainty, through tournaments and financial support programs for boxers and coaches.
