CONCERNED—Kunkuyu (centre) and Huawei officials
SHARE

By Wezzie Gausi:

There is low uptake of the information, communication and Technology (ICT) skills among Malawians, the Minister of Information has conceded.

A 2021 study by the Public Private Partnership Commission suggests that 54 percent of men in Malawi do not possess foundational digital skills and 74 percent of women are lacking basic digital literacy.

Speaking during the launch of this year’s Malawi Seeds for the Future on Monday in Lilongwe, Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu said more needs to be done to improve the situation.

“We believe that the youth of Malawi, with creativity and critical thinking, are able to transform this country into one of the most promising digital economies in Africa,” Kunkuyu said.

Huawei Malawi Managing Director Gomez Gu said Huawei has started Seed for the Future in 2016.

He said since they started the initiative, over 200 young people from both public and private universities have benefited.

“We will continue to help young people in Malawi to attain the much needed skills in ICT as the world is now turning digital, “Gu said.

Former beneficiary of the initiative, Martin Manyozo, said the initiative helps to empower young people with digital skills and power.

“I cannot thank Huawei enough for starting this project. Through this initiative, I have been able to win many awards and I am able to impart my skills in other young people,” Manyozo said.

The 2023 cohort of Seed for the Future has 50 students that were selected from both public and private universities.

The aim of the initiative is to have vibrant young people with vast skills in ICT.
