After a two-week break due to the festive season, Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Session at Jacaranda Cultural Centre (JCC) in Blantyre returns to the stage this Thursday, starting off with Lucky Stars Band of the ‘Chinafuna Mbale’ fame led by Boniface Ndamera.
This is not the first time for Lucky Stars Band to perform at Sounds of Malawi but host ethno-musician Waliko Makhala said they decided to give the group another set to open up 2024 in style.
“The year 2023 was great as we unveiled new talents and also engaged established artists. We are continuing from where we left off last year and we will continue searching for new talent and offer them a platform,” Makhala, who took over as host from Code Sangala, said.
He said they were excited to support artists who are working towards blending authentic sounds of Malawi.
“Sounds of Malawi is there to grow Malawian music and sell it to the world. We are thankful for the support that people give us and we call upon them not to tire but continue patronising the sessions this year,” Makhala said.

JCC Director Luc Deschamps, who is also French Honorary Consul to Malawi, said Sounds of Malawi is a unique platform for both artists and the audience of Malawi.
“Artists have the chance to perform in a professional setting and work on their repertoire by using the roots of traditional music and dances of the country while the audience has the opportunity to hear and feel a bit of rhythms and the musical soul of Malawi,” Deschamps said.
He further said that Sounds of Malawi is a great way for anyone to connect or reconnect with the traditions of the country.
“Every Thursday night, we feature local bands or internationally famous artists as well as youthful and up and coming bands. We are grateful to the audience for supporting our efforts which are also preserving the heritage of Malawi,” Deschamps said.
