Malawi Defence Force side Red Lions has said it will work towards returning to the TNM Super League as it starts preparations to compete in the Thumbs Up Southern Region Football League Premier Division.
Lions started preparing for life in the second tier on Monday with a call to players from across the country to try their luck at the Zomba-based side.
The team’s Media Officer Joy Khakona said they will do their best to keep the players who campaigned in the 2023 Super League.
“We are doing all we can to keep our players and beef up with new ones who are capable of strengthening our team. We will stick with the players who have been with us for all these seasons. We want the experience they gained from the Super League to help us bounce back in the league,” Khakona said.

He said they will also maintain the technical team comprising coach Franco Ndawa, his assistants Chifundo Masapula and Malumbo Mkandawire, and team manager Lawrence Mphande.
“We are also expecting the return of goalkeeper Jacob Kaunda, left back Henry Kamunga and striker Royal Bokosi who were on a peace keeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We expect the three to arrive on Saturday.
“We believe their return will help bring confidence in our camp and make us even stronger. We will also keep a cordial relationship with Cobbe Barracks who are expected to compete in the Southern Region Football Association Division One League.
“This team was disbanded in 2019 but it is now back. Cobbe are our brothers-in-arms and we believe their return to league football will help us to perform better as we will be getting top performing players from the team,” Khakona said.
