World Boxing Forum former welterweight champion Agness Mtimaukanena is contemplating hanging up gloves again due to lack of fights.
Mtimaukanena, who retired in 2022 before returning to the ring last year, has been frustrated due to lack of fights.
“It is painful to train hard and then have a fight cancelled. If the trend continues, I will have no option but hang up the gloves,” the World Boxing Council former silver contender said.
The boxer had three offers for international bouts and two local challenges but nothing materialised.
Mtimaukanena said boxers spend a lot of resources, including gym and trainers’ fees, on preparations for fights.

“During preparations, we require a lot of things, including a special diet, according to the game plan. We keep on spending but, sadly, fights are cancelled without any compensation being paid to the boxer,” she said.

However, Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board President Lonzoe ‘Defector’ Zimba asked boxers to engage the body when dealing with contractual issues.
“Most of the problems which boxers encounter can easily be sorted if they involve us from the beginning. They should refrain from using shortcuts. As long as the issue is with us, we can easily intervene,” Zimba said.
In April last year, Mtimaukanena bounced back into the ring after a five-year break.

And she did so in convincing fashion, defeating Lucy Macho on unanimous points basis.
Mtimaukanena made the return to active boxing after she last fought at Club 24/7 at Kameza Roundabout in Blantyre, where she defeated Eugene Kayange on points in 2017.
