Players in the renewable energy sector have said collaboration is key to scaling up efforts aimed at addressing renewable energy gaps.
Officials under Renewable Energy Industries Association of Malawi (Reima) said this in Blantyre during a conference that was held as part of the Global Renewable Centre Project.
“Challenges in accessing clean and affordable energy are many. We have five themes to look at and these are technology, finance, business models, regulatory and policy environment and social economic impact. We need to look at these seriously if we are to scale up the use of renewable energy sources in Malawi,” said Soustain Chigalu, Reima president.
Senior Adviser within the Global Expert Group of Bankers Without Borders in Malawi, Violent Santhe, said stakeholders should come together and device ways of accessing funds for implementation of renewable energy projects.

“The [use of] renewable energy is growing in Africa, replacing fossil fuels. As such, there is space for players in the renewable energy space,” Santhe said.
Reports indicate that Malawi has low energy access rates in the world.
Energy access rate for electricity is currently below 20 percent.
