Renewable Energy Industries Association of Malawi (Reiama) has called on players in various sectors of the economy to work together towards increasing energy generation and electricity supply in the country.
The association says more needs to be done for Malawi to achieve Sustainable Development Goal number seven, which is about ensuring access to clean and affordable energy, as a catalyst for the development of agriculture, business, communications, education, healthcare and transportation.
Reiama President Sausten Chigalu said this when the association received a K2 million cheque from National Bank of Malawi (NBM) to go towards hosting of its annual conference slated for next month.
Chigalu said the conference will be held under the theme Energy Diversification for Sustainable Development’.
He said it will also focus on three sub themes of Energy Diversification and Sources, Energy Regulatory Environment and Financing and Opportunities in the Energy Sector.

He said Malawi remains among the bottom three countries with limited access to electricity for its citizens and diversified energy generation is one of the remedies.
“We have SDG 7 by the United Nations which says everyone should have renewable energy by 2030 and, in Malawi, we are working towards reaching 50 percent electrification by 2030. So, we need to work together to achieve these goals,” Chigalu said.
NBM Senior Manager for Retail Banking Division Eric Munthali said energy is a very important aspect in Malawi’s economy, hence the bank’s commitment to the cause.
“We expect that they will critically analyse the issues affecting Malawi’s economy, in terms of the energy sector.
