Ascent Academy wrote their own piece of history after they clinched this year’s Goshen Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Women’s Championship following a 1-0 victory over Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Lionesses at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
Marrium Mnenula was the heroine when she scored the only goal of the match in the 15th minute of the match.
There is something special about Ascent as they won the competition without conceding a goal in three matches, having beaten deposed champions Kukoma Ntopwa 4-0 in the quarterfinals before registering a 2-0 victory over Silver Strikers Ladies in the semi-final match.
For winning the competition, Ascent got K8 million plus a trophy whereas Lionesses received K4 million.
This means Ascent have also qualified for this year’s Caf Champions League/Cosafa qualifier slated for later this year.

After the match, Ascent Coach Thom Mkolongo was on cloud nine.
“The girls showed great character throughout the match,” Mkolongo said.
Lionesses Coach John Kaputa was, on the other hand, dejected.
“We tried our best but Ascent were resolute at the back,” Kaputa said.

In terms of individual awards, Mkolongo was named coach of the tournament whereas Mnenula was named player of the tournament.
