Security guards at the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc) have raised concerns about alleged underpayment for daily overtime.
In a letter addressed to the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Daniel Makata, the employees say they have been working an additional four hours each day for which they are not being adequately compensated.
“As you are aware, we work 12 hours a day, which is four hours more than the standard eight.
“Despite this, our overtime pay is disproportionately low, amounting to approximately K40,000, which is almost a quarter of our basic pay of K190,000, rather than one and a half times our basic pay.

“It seems we are being paid a duty allowance, which was abolished and replaced by legally allowed overtime payment,” the letter reads.
The workers have requested a review of the overtime pay structure to ensure it aligns with Malawi’s labour laws and the organisation’s staff terms and conditions of service.
“We request that our overtime pay be recalculated to reflect the correct rate. We further believe this will not only be fair compensation for our extra work but also boost our morale and productivity,” the letter says.
Admarc spokesperson Teresa Chapulapula said the State-owned grain trader is paying the guards in accordance with employment laws.

Admarc recruited over 900 guards across the country early last year as part of its restructuring process.
