National Bank of Malawi (NBM) will launch the NBM Under-23 Championship at Mangochi Stadium in Mangochi District this Saturday.
NBM Product Development and Strategy Manager Ibrahim Chapeyama disclosed this at the bank’s headquarters in Blantyre Wednesday.
Chapeyama said the bank’s main objective is to nurture talent in the country.
“The championship will be played across 31 districts in the country and each district will comprise 16 teams, which gives us a total of 2,000 matches. Best teams from the districts will have regional playoffs and, later, have national playoffs,” Chapeyama said.
The bank unveiled a K1 billion football sponsorship package recently.

Out of K1 billion, K500 million is going towards grassroots football, targeting District and Division One men’s football.
Chapeyama said the bank has organised several activations in Mangochi, starting from Thursday [today] ahead of the launch.
“In addition, we will be opening accounts and also opening wallets for our potential customers. We have a parade going to the stadium on Saturday, with musicians who have been engaged to spice up the event. As such, we are looking for a great launch on Saturday,” he said.
During the sponsorship unveiling ceremony on July 10, 2025 at Mpira Village in Blantyre, Football Association of Malawi (Fam) President Fleetwood Haiya said the competition is restricted to U-23 players who are registered in Mpira Connect.

Haiya said Fam would be conducting a thorough age verification process using national identity cards and valid school identification to improve data collection and performance tracking using the FAM player registration and competition management system.
The match between Mangochi All Stars and Chawe Bullets will spice up the launch.
NBM also sponsors the first-ever women’s national championship and the Malawi Women’s National Football Team.
