The three-day Zomba City Festival starts Friday through to Sunday with several activities in various disciplines including music, theatre, visual arts and drama set to keep people on toes.

Organisers said Thursday that they were set for the three-day feast to be held in five venues and eight stages.

Some of the venues for the festival include University of Malawi, Dominos, Botanical Gardens, Heritage Centre and Chalice Vine.

Zomba City Festival Creative Director and founder Laura Schuerwegen said the festival is making progress in its quest to promote the old capital city through the arts.

Laura said the team was excited and looking forward to the best of the launch today.

“Planning has run very smoothly and we are looking forward to a sunny and art filled weekend. It is chilly in Zomba in the evening so, we advise the public to bring warm jackets or sweaters for the nightlife as all of our evening entertainment is open air,” she said.

Laura said the festival treats all the art disciplines equally hence inviting people to sample all the artistic disciplines on the menu.

“As a festival, we do not have headliners but we have top artists performing including Piksy, who will perform on Sunday at Botanical Gardens,” Laura said.

Other performances tomorrow include Must Band, Yoneco Cultural Troupe, Rwanda Traditional Dance, Yoneco Theatre, Jacaranda Cultural Troupe, Kanthunkhama Theatre, Hope Masike from Zimbabwe and DJ Wndrz.

On Sunday, some of the acts include yoga, aerobics, Unima Choir, Must Band, Zebra Band and Chanco Travelling Theatre.

Other artists that will star at the festival to be hosted by among others, Super DT, Sugar Kenny, Ruth Chavula, Gene, Miss Grande, Cee Zee and Mubanga Mumu include Isabel King, Eazi Wright, Provoice, Annemarie Quinn and Sagonjah.

On the poetry and writing world, the stage will attract acts such as Q Malewezi, Keitumile Kawilima, Jane Senenje, Monalisa Alfonso, Refilwe and Muthi Nhlema whereas visual arts will bring artists such as Akulu Lipenga, Tee Mlinga, Jacaranda School of Orphans and Unima Arts Exhibition.

The festival now in its fourth edition has partnered a number of players and they include Amaryllis Hotel, Gold Mountain Media and Entertainers Promotions.

“We also have an Artsy Alley with activities such as bouncing castle, face painting, kids stage, kids exhibition and art workshops. Children under 12, the entry is free of charge,” Laura said.

She said as a festival, they will always strive to offer something different every year.
