Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader and former President Peter Mutharika has once again taken a swipe at “some individuals” in the party who he accused of thinking they are more important than anyone else.
While Mutharika did not name the individuals, there have been wrangles in the party with a team led by Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa challenging some decisions made by a faction purportedly supporting the former president.
During a caucus that Mutharika had with 41 DPP Members of Parliament (MPs) at his Page House in Mangochi yesterday, the DPP leader asked the MPs to be united ahead of the 2025 elections.
“Nobody should think that DPP can move forward with him only. It is unfortunate that some people are going to court to complain without following party structures that deal with problems,” Mutharika said.
He was apparently referring to cases where some DPP officials, particularly those in the so-called Nankhumwa camp, have been suing the party’s leadership for supposedly acting undemocratically.

The former president then said he was ready to go to the ballot and wrestle power from the Tonse Alliance administration which he described as the worst government Malawi has ever had.
“The country was on a good path and when I said we wanted to make Malawi look like Singapore, I meant it. But Malawians made a wrong decision. It is up to them to correct the situation in 2025 and vote DPP back to power,” he said.
Mutharika recently announced that he would compete at the party’s elective convention slated for December 25, 2023 in Mangochi.
Nankhumwa also announced that he would seek to become DPP’s torchbearer at the convention.

Meanwhile, the party has announced that it needs K700 million for the elective conference and that it is finalising arrangements for the meeting which is expected to attract not less than 2,000 delegates.
Those aspiring for the position of president are supposed to part ways with K3 million which those seeking vice-president positions will pay K2 million. Secretary general (SG) aspirants will pay K2 million while those seeking positions of vice SGs will pay K1.5 million as nomination fees.
The Supreme Court recently threw out an appeal by DPP to stay an order by the High Court that the party should hold an elective conference by December 30, 2023.
