The 2024 edition of the Castel Challenge Cup will kick off on June 8 at Champions Stadium in Mponela, Dowa District.
Football Association of Malawi (Fam) and sponsors Castel Malawi Limited announced this Monday at Mpira Palace in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre, during regional and district draws.
Fam Marketing and Broadcasting Manager Tulipo Mwenelupembe said they are expecting stiff competition during this year’s race following the increase of the sponsorship package from K320 million to K400 million.
“Among the goals of the competition is to see people from all levels participating in the competition. That is why we are launching it in Mponela so that it signifies our goal of taking the game to all Malawians,” Mwenelupembe said.
On her part, Castel Head of Corporate Marketing and Communications Lavern Chitakata said they are back this season after being impressed with the way the competition was staged last season.
“Our objective is that we should develop from the grassroots, hence increasing sponsorship and also the prize money for the teams,” Chitakata.
The 2024 Castel Challenge Cup will see 16 Super League teams, 99 regional leagues (31 from the south, 22 from the centre and 46 from the north) and 960 district teams (448 from the south, 288 from the centre and 224 from the north.
The winner will pocket K55 million, up from last year’s K50 million.
