Chinese Ambassador to Malawi Long Zhou has said his country is committed to supporting Malawi in various sectors including security.
Zhou said this on Monday at National Police Headquarters in Lilongwe where his government was handing over 12 motorcycles worth K30 million to Malawi Police Service (MPS).
He said through the Global Security Initiative championed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, they are promoting International Corporation which will also benefit Malawi.
“The purpose of the initiative is to promote international cooperation among all countries to promote and fight against crime and security of all the people across the country.

“It is an initiative put forward for multilateral and bilateral corporations so, in case of China and Malawi, we appreciate very much the challenges that Malawi is facing and we Chinese people and government are willing to provide help to cement our corporation in fighting crime,” he said.

Homeland Security Minister Ken Zikhale Ng’oma commended China for the donation.
Ng’oma said the donation will go a long way in addressing mobility challenges within MPS.
“I am overwhelmed with joy with the donation because it will help us in terms of mobility and we will need more and more of these donations to help the type of work we are doing to make sure that we intensify security in the country,” he said.

He commended the cordial relationship existing between Malawi and China.
“There is a cordial relationship between China and Malawi Government and we really want this relationship to continue and this is something that we don’t take for granted,” Ng’oma said.

MPS Inspector General Merlyne Yolamu said the motorcycles will be distributed to officers in hard-to-reach areas including borders of the country.
“There are some areas bordering with other countries so it is pertinent that we should be patrolling such areas but we had mobility challenges; so these motorcycles will help our performance in patrolling such areas,” Yolamu said.
