By Deogratias Mmana:
Malawi has investment opportunities in areas such as agro-processing, mining, tourism, manufacturing, infrastructure, energy and others, a Chinese investor has observed.
The investor, who is also President of the Jin Merchants General Chamber of Commerce in Malawi Ma Zhanjiang has said Malawi could boost its economy if it could exploit the investment opportunities with seriousness and commitment.
According to Ma, some of the investment opportunities in the agriculture sector include livestock production for dairy and beef, aquaculture, horticulture, agro-processing, sugar, piggery, honey production, integrated cotton development, cassava production and mushroom growing.
Ma said Malawi was yet to tap resources from the mining sector, among other areas.

“In the mining sector, the specific investment opportunities include gold, uranium, platinum group of minerals, base metals, nickel and copper, dimension stone, phosphates, heavy mineral sands, graphite and coal,” he said.
For the tourism sector, he said Malawi was endowed with beautiful and unique tourist spots including Lake Malawi, national parks and game reserves, Mulanje Mountain, wild game (the big five) forest reserves and cultural and historical sites such as missionary graves and slave trade villages, national heritage sites, monuments such as old State houses.
But he said there was more work to do.
He cited the specific investment opportunities which include eco-tourism, hotel, camps and lodges; water and lake sports; cultural and traditional troupes; wilderness safari, travel and tours; game and forest lodges and casinos and entertainments centres.

In the manufacturing sector, Ma said there were great opportunities for investors to convert agricultural products into high-value finished products.
Natural Resources, Energy and Mining Minister Jean Mathanga said recently when she visited Mulanje Hydro that major investments in electricity generation and distribution would be rolled out from next year as part of an ambitious plan to address persistent power shortage and support economic growth.
Minister of Industrialisation, Business, Trade and Tourism George Patridge recently also called on Malawians to produce value added products to narrow the ever-widening trade deficit that has been crippling the economy.
