By Llywellenie Mpasa:
A total of 25 goalkeeper coaches from across Malawi have embraced modern goalkeeping techniques following a five-day Fifa Elite Youth Goalkeeper Coaches Workshop in Blantyre under the Fifa Talent Development Scheme.
The sessions, facilitated by Fifa goalkeeping experts Ali Saleh and David Taini, combined classroom theory with practical on-field drills designed to reflect the demands of the modern game.
Drawn from national teams, women’s sides, academies and selected Super League youth teams, the coaches took part in the programme hosted by the Football Association of Malawi (Fam) at Mpira Village in Chiwembe.

Saleh said the workshop provided a vital platform for knowledge exchange, stressing that the role of goalkeepers has significantly evolved in recent years.

“Football is evolving every day and clubs are now looking for modern goalkeepers,” he said. The programme focused on contemporary goalkeeping techniques, talent identification and age-specific training methods to help local coaches develop players who can compete at a higher level.
Saleh said understanding the local football context was key to ensuring sustainable development.
“We are here to share knowledge with our colleagues and understand the local context so that we can collectively improve goalkeeping in Malawi,” he said.
The workshop is part of a broader series of Fifa-supported technical programmes being implemented by Fam as the association continues to prioritise long-term football development and professionalism in Malawi.

Representing the coaches, Under-17 Men’s National Team Goalkeeper Coach Hethwin Nkumbaleza said the workshop was timely as the game is becoming increasingly technical and demanding.
“This is a valuable opportunity to learn new approaches as the game continues to evolve. It will help us better train young goalkeepers and improve the goalkeeping department,” he said.
