Contractor for Lilongwe City’s Game-Shoprite Road, China Jiangxi International (Malawi) Ltd, has abandoned works again over payment issues.
Roads Authority spokesperson Lawrent Kumchenga confirmed the development.
He, however, said he could not comment further, saying Roads Fund Administration officials were better placed to provide details on the issue.
Roads Fund Administration spokesperson Masauko Ngwaluko also confirmed the situation to The Daily Times.

He could, however, not be drawn to comment on how much the fund owes the contractor
“We confirm that the contractor is owed some payments for certified works. We are processing some payments and have sought funding from the government,” Ngwaluko said.
He further said the fund would soon be processing payment to the contractor so that the project can continue.
“Once funding is allocated, we will certainly process some payments. We are optimistic that the contractor will resume works soon,” Ngwaluko said.

However, according to sources, the government owes the company over K3 billion for certified works.
The project, which commenced on May 8, 2025, was scheduled for completion in May 2026.
China Jiangxi International (Malawi) Ltd initially started the project on May 8, 2025 but abandoned it on November 19 last year, before resuming earlier this year.
The rehabilitation and capacity improvement of the M1 Road, specifically the section connecting Crossroads to Game Complex via Mzimba Street in Lilongwe, is a major urban road project that is aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving infrastructure.
