The government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing accommodation challenges besetting public universities.
Secretary for Education Ken Ndala said, in partnership with development partners, the government was making strides on projects pertaining to the construction of more hostels in public universities.
“We, as government, are trying to find ways of constructing more hostels. Most public universities now have projects that are premised on hostels’ construction,” Ndala said.
He made the remarks yesterday during the third graduation of 1,335 Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (Mubas) students.

At the event, which took place at Mubas campus in Blantyre City, students obtained diplomas, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
Ndala presided over the event.

Mubas Vice Chancellor Nancy Chitera said the institution had equipped the graduates with the necessary knowledge and skills.
She said the university was also strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities, citing its agricultural mechanisation unit, to promote food security, among other production areas.

“Every university is measured by the difference it makes to society. Our ambition is to generate knowledge, create solutions and transform society,” Chitera said.
Mike Mapanga, who graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, vowed to work hardy.
“We have been prepared enough to face the realities of the world,” Mapanga said.
Statistics from the university indicate that, as of 2026, it had a total enrolment of over 11,000 students and is reportedly aiming to achieve an enrolment of about 30,000 students by the year 2030.
