Barely a day after holding a compliance cocktail event in Blantyre, Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma) held a meeting with Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services on foreign artists’ compliance to the country’s laws.
The copyright body wrote on its Facebook page that it engaged the department in Blantyre with an aim of strengthening cooperation on visa and permit processes for foreign artists and bands.
Cosoma Spokesperson Catherine Mitungwi Chiumia confirmed the meeting saying the engagement focused on aligning copyright authorisation with Immigration requirements to enhance compliance, enforcement and protection of both local and foreign artists.
“The meeting emphasised that foreign artists must comply with both Cosoma procedures and Immigration laws including visa, entry and permit requirements,” Chiumia said.
During a cocktail event held under the theme ‘Harmonising Creativity and Compliance,’ Cosoma called for collective responsibility in the country to uphold copyright law and support creativity as a driver of national development.

Makwinja said every user of protected works from broadcasters, hospitality establishments, event organisers and digital platforms to commercial entities, financial institutions, telecommunications companies, universities, copy shops and secondary schools, must play their part in ensuring adherence to the Copyright Act of 2016.
She said beyond legality, compliance represents respect for creativity, fairness in commerce, and ethical business practice.
