The Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) has said it will lobby for the allocation of more funds to give Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe a facelift.
MNCS Chairperson Jim Kalua made the remarks during an inspection of the facility yesterday.
Kalua said he was concerned that the facility was in a dilapidated state.
“There are some things which need to be fixed at the facility. If well maintained, the facility can be used for commercial purposes. It has a lot of potential to generate more resources,” Kalua said.
He said, for instance, that chairs for the main hall needed to be replaced.

In addition, he expressed concern over electrical wires at the facility.
“There is an urgent need to fix the chairs and electrical wires. We need to do something as soon as possible because it is dangerous,” Kalua said.
The facility has several rooms which are used as offices for some sports associations, including
Athletics Malawi and Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam).

During the tour, Kalua also inspected basketball and volleyball courts.
This was his first tour of the facility since he was appointed MNCS Board Chairperson in December last year.
Kalua was accompanied by other board members, including Escort Chinula and Senior Chief Njolomole.
Officials from MNCS secretariat, including acting chief executive officer Ivy Chinangwa and director of marketing Limbani Matola, were also present during the tour.
