Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members Wednesday invaded president-elect Peter Mutharika’s residence in Nyambadwe, Blantyre City, to celebrate his victory.
The people started trickling into the place around 12 noon as it was expected that the Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) would announce presidential results at 2pm.
Most of the supporters came from surrounding areas such as Ndirande Township, Mbayani, Nyambadwe and Chirimba to join the jubilation.
They chanted songs of jubilation, with others dancing.

“This is the moment that we had been waiting for. APM [Arthur Peter Mutharika] is here to serve the nation. We are back to the period of eating three times a day,” Eneles Muyaba from Ndirande Township said.
Other senior officials such as Director of Women Mary Navicha, spokesperson Shadric Namalomba, Director of Youth Norman Chisale and former Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha were also there.
In a related development, DPP governor for the Southern Region, Charles Mchacha, has said the party is prepared to start tackling socio-economic challenges that “have escalated” in the past five years.
Mchacha made the remarks in Blantyre Wednesday during a victory cerebration match DPP officials and supporters organised.

“We are glad that Chakwera has accepted that APM [Arthur Peter Mutharika] has won the election. DPP is a system with good policies and you will see, soon, things changing for the better,” Mchacha said.
Mchacha emphasised that DPP is eager to address essential public services as soon as Mutharika is inaugurated.
On his part, Blantyre City South MP Noel Lipipa assured citizens of improved public service delivery.
“We know that we have a task to perform for the people and we will prioritise people’s welfare over politics,” Lipipa said.
