DPP, Tonse trade barbs on economy

Reserve Bank of Malawi former governor Dalitso Kabambe has said “it is too late” for the Tonse Alliance administration to save the country from economic problems.

He said it may take more than 24 months for the economy to be fixed.

But government spokesperson Moses Kunkuyu has described the claims as rantings of “bitter people”.

Kabambe spoke at a press briefing which the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) organised to appraise Malawians on the current state of affairs, notably on issues such as the economy, security and corruption.

The former central bank chief said Malawi has three cancers, which he identified as fiscal cancer, monetary cancer and exchange rate cancer.

“These need a quick fix if the economy is to register meaningful economic growth,” Kabambe said.

He said the country has taken what he described as “an impotent monetary stance that is manifested by the misalignment between the official exchange rate and black market rate” and the rising inflation rate.

“Solving these problems is a boy’s work if those in authority were serious about fixing this nation but it is too late for the Tonse Alliance to fix this country because the damage they have done may take 24 months to fix, which will mean we are already in 2025 to vote again,” Kabambe said.

Apart from Kabambe, the briefing attracted DPP senior officials such as Eastern Region vice president Bright Msaka, party spokesperson Shadric Namalomba, lawmaker Mary Navicha and councillor Leonard Chimbanga, who took turns to lambast the current administration, painting themselves as the “hope for Malawians”.

Responding to the sentiments, Kunkuyu said the remarks by DPP officials are coming from anger, which has emanated from bitterness that they lost control of the country in the court-ordered presidential election of June 2020.

He said there are some problems which are not man-made because they are a result of global trends, such that the government is working on them.

“We must understand that they have bitterness but we have a country to run. Therefore, there is nothing [like] Chakwera stepping down. There is no call for an early election from the people they claim to represent; they are desperate for power but, unfortunately, that is not what Malawians are looking for,” Kunkuyu said.
