FCB Nyasa Big Bullets started their Caf Champions League adventure with a bang after beating Dragon FC 0-2 at Estadio de Malabo in Equatorial Guinea Sunday.
The result is a massive advantage to Bullets, heading into the second leg slated for Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe this coming Sunday.
The People’s Team will just need a draw to book a spot in the second preliminary round of the competition.
In a match monitored on Bullets Facebook page, Maxwell Gasten Phodo was the hero of the match as he bagged a brace for Bullets.
Phodo opened the scoring in the seventh minute of the match when he headed in Lanjesi Nkhoma’s cross.
He completed his brace in the 36th minute, firing into the net from inside the box.
Bullets had other chances to bang in more goals but Blessings Mpokera blasted his shot over the bar after being set up by Ernest Petro in the 39th minute.
Precious Sambani also had a chance towards the end of the first half but his effort went over the bar.
Phodo came back onto the scene with another goal in the 61st minute of the match but it was ruled out for offside.
Dragon tried hard to reduce the deficit, making two changes in the second half, but nothing changed.
Bullets also made two changes with MacFarlane Mgwira and Chawanangwa Gumbo going in for Nkhoma and Mpokera.
Towards the end of the match, Ephraim Kondowe replaced Phodo whereas Kenneth Pasuwa went in for Petro.
The hosts tried their best to salvage something from the match but Bullets held on for the valuable result away from home.
The winner between Bullets and Dragon will face the Democratic Republic of Congo giants TP Mazembe in the second preliminary round.
Bullets are hoping to go through to the next round for the first time since 2015, when they defeated Fomboni FC of the Comoros 3-2 on aggregate.
Last year, Bullets exited the competition after a 4-0 aggregate loss to Tanzania’s Simba SC.
