Local renewable energy start-up, Sky Energy Africa, has officially unveiled Malawi’s first electric vehicle (EV), the Citroen e-C3, on the market.

Speaking during the launch on Friday, Sky Energy Africa founder and Managing Director Schizzo Thomson said the enterprise is a significant stride in the realm of sustainable transportation.

He said the EVs would not only address Malawi’s fuel scarcity concerns but also make strides in reducing air pollution and carbon emissions that contribute to climate-related disasters.

“We have taken a pioneering step towards a sustainable future, showcasing our commitment to providing diverse and cutting-edge solutions for eco-conscious transportation,” Thomson said.

The Citroen e-C3 boasts an array of specifications that mark it as a game-changer in Malawi’s automotive landscape.

With a robust electric motor, the e-C3 offers an impressive range of approximately 200 kilometres (km) on a single charge.

“With its fast-charging capabilities, the EV can be fully charged within hours, making it a convenient and efficient choice for urban and suburban commuting,” he said.

He said the incorporation of a dual charging system in the EV empowers customers with the flexibility to conveniently charge the vehicles at home using standard charging outlets, ensuring hassle-free daily use.

He said the affordability of this eco-friendly mode of transport, only costs K5,000 to fully charge the EV for a 350- km journey.

He added that it costs a minimum of $10 000 (about K12 million) depending on specification.

Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola affirmed the government’s support for groundbreaking technology.

Matola emphasised that the government fully endorses this innovative technology and is committed to its widespread adoption throughout the country.

“In the 2023/24 national budget, the government removed taxes on the importation of EVs and their charging systems, a clear demonstration of its commitment to promoting sustainable transportation options and encouraging the adoption of these vehicles,” he said.

The minister encouraged private sector participation and collaboration in the EV market, emphasising the potential for job creation and the development of a sustainable EV ecosystem in the country.
