First Capital Bank (FCB) has been unveiled as the official sponsor of the forthcoming Four Nations tournament scheduled for Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

The bank has pumped K50 million into the competition, which kicks off on March 23 with senior and under-20 national teams from Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya and hosts Malawi taking part.

Addressing the media at Football Association of Malawi (Fam)’s Mpira House in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre, FCB Head of Marketing and Communication Twikale Chirwa said they are excited to bankroll the international contest.

“We made a decision to sponsor the tournament because most of the players who are in the Flames camp came from the under-20 league which we sponsor. So we will be very happy to see these players representing Malawi at this stage,” Chirwa said.

He said the decision to sponsor the tournament was easy to make because of the cordial relationship which exists between FCB and Fam.

Chirwa said they would use the opportunity to express gratitude for the support they are receiving from people of the five Southern African Development Community (Sadc) member states they have branches in.

“FCB has branches in Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, Malawi and Zambia and we thought it wise to be part of this competition to say ‘thank you’ to our customers in these countries. We are hopeful that our involvement in the tournament will help Fam to prepare well for the tournament.

“We believe in football development and the good news is that the tournament will involve youth teams as well. So we find this event to be very exciting and not worth missing. We, therefore, appreciate the need to come forward during such times to help these youngsters,” Twikale said.

Fam Chief Executive Officer Alfred Gunda said FCB has always been a true partner in football sponsorship.

“FCB is not new to football sponsorship in Malawi. The bank sponsors the FCB Under-19 League and Nyasa Big Bullets Football Club. So we are very grateful to the bank for partnering us in the Four Nations tournament. We consider this support as a vote of confidence to the Malawi football family.

“It is exciting to see the relationship between us and FCB transcending the borders to appeal to the wider Sadc bloc. Let me assure the bank that we, as a host nation for this tournament, will deliver value for this K50 million investment,” Gunda said.

He said Fam is gearing up for an exciting tournament with FCB as the big brand during the entire duration of the tournament.

Malawi will start the tournament with a showdown against Kenya while Zambia will face Zimbabwe.
