Some people are reportedly in dire need of help after being trapped by floods in some parts of Nkhotakota following a heavy downpour.
Nkhotakota District Council acting Disaster Risk Management Officer George Zibophe said they sourced boats for a rescue mission.
Zibophe said community members around Bua, Dwangwa and Kaombe rivers are the most affected and that a number of houses have been damaged.
He, however, said verification has not been done due to persistent rainfall and impassability of roads.
The heavy downpour, which started on Tuesday, has submerged a stretch from Kaombe bridge to Kaombe road block on the M5 Road, rendering it impassable.

Yesterday morning, some people were stranded on either side of the stretch in question.
When The Daily Times crew visited the scene at 7am, it found a vehicle trapped in the middle of the submerged stretch after the driver reportedly ignored warnings.
Meanwhile, Nkhotakota Police Station spokesperson Paul Malimwe has appealed to travellers not to use the submerged stretch on the M5 Road until further notice.
“We want to alert all road users travelling from Nkhotakota Boma to Dwangwa using the lakeshore road to wait until further notice because the stretch from Kaombe bridge to Kaombe road block is not passable due to heavy rains,” he said.

The district has been receiving rains since last Tuesday, culminating in the washing away of maize and rice crops that are in fields.
