Malawi’s private sector is reeling from Tuesday’s 41 percent fuel price hike, with businesses warning of crippling effects on operations across transport, agriculture, manufacturing and small enterprises.
The Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) said on Wednesday that the adjustment had pushed pump prices to about $2.90 per litre for both petrol and diesel, placing Malawi among the most expensive fuel markets in the region.
Zambia’s fuel costs remain at about $1.29 per litre while Mozambique’s prices hover around $1.31 for petrol and $1.25 for diesel—less than half Malawi’s levels.
In a commentary on the potential effects of fuel increases on businesses, MCCCI cautioned that firms may scale back operations or lay off workers, eroding competitiveness and export performance.

“Micro, small and medium enterprises are equally exposed, with rising input and transport costs threatening closures and reduced capacity. The fuel hike compounds other shocks, including increased taxation and high electricity tariffs under Escom [Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi]’s third tranche adjustment,” the commentary reads.

MCCCI Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Daisy Kambalame said the disparity reflected exchange rate pressures and steep adjustments under the Automatic Pricing Mechanism.
“Transport and logistics operators, whose fuel expenses account for 30 to 50 percent of operating costs, face immediate strain. Transporters have already announced fare and freight hikes, leading to higher delivery costs and reduced demand. Small operators risk closures while logistics delays exacerbate supply chain issues.
“This cascades into broader inflation, as transport costs feed into production costs and retail prices, lowering already challenged capacity utilisation. Diesel-powered tractors, irrigation systems and produce transport face higher costs, squeezing smallholder margins. Past hikes contributed to food inflation peaking at 30.7 percent in 2025. With forex shortages limiting imports, this risks food insecurity and lower agricultural productivity,” Kambalame said.
On Tuesday, the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority raised petrol prices to K4,965 per litre and diesel to K4,945 per litre, effective January 20, 2026.

Mera acting CEO Dad Chinthambi said the adjustment corrected market distortions and ensured statutory levies were reflected in pump prices.
